Sceptical Reflections About Ontology
نویسنده
چکیده
Ontologies (and Metaphysics) are floating around since Plato and Aristotle. Although these things have often been declared as non-existent, or as outright nonsense and frauds, nevertheless, rigorous, cold-blooded and definite proofs for these unfriendly judgements seem still to be lacking. The adjective sceptical in the title of the present paper is, of course, a polite euphemism. For we can show: (1) If any theory at all is an ontology, then every theory, however modest or however bright, is also an ontology. (2) If any entity (concept, relation,...) at all is ontological or ontic, then every entity etc.,... is ontic or ontological. (3) On the other hand, the ontologists have claimed and are still claiming that there exist proper ontologies, and intrinsically ontic entities (relations, concepts,...). These ontologists are, unfortunately, right concerning this claim; for these proper ontologies and intrinsically ontic entities are nothing else than the wrong and nonsensical theories, and the purely surreptitious entities (like immaterial and spiritual substances, or mortal sins), properties, relations and events of the proper ontologists in question, respectively. The same holds true of the splendid titles metaphysics, metaphysician, and metaphysical. Therefore, almost all of Western Philosophy (in the proper sense) will (in the near future, viz. after the benevolent reception of the present paper) rush down into nothingness. Eastern Philosophy, including Her daughter Western Theology (i.e. the ontological theory about a certain deified despotic sultan who permitted his only son to be crucified, and Giordano Bruno to be burnt at the stake), will follow suit. From this, it already follows that there are no ontologies (or metaphysics)— provided, e.g., Euclidean geometry is no ontology (or no metaphyiscs). It even suffices to assume that the tiny theory {2 + 3 = 5} is no ontology (or no metaphysics). Again, the concept rat or the geometric relation of betweenness have nothing ontological or metaphysical in them. Therefore, ...

The Methodology of Musical Ontology: Descriptivism and Its Implications
I investigate the widely held view that fundamental musical ontology should be descriptivist rather than revisionary, that is, that it should describe how we think about musical works, rather than how they are independently of our thought about them. I argue that if we take descriptivism seriously then, first, we should be sceptical of artontological arguments that appeal to independent metaphy...
متن کاملReflections on the Ontology of Mass Art as Avant-garde Art
The aesthetics of “everyday experience” is made by a paradigm that defines the duality of the Elite art/low-class art by focusing on the art of the majority/minority, based on the desire of the urban middle class, It has been put as the art of the people in opposition to the art of avant-garde. The study is based on reflections on possibility of finding the main origin between the art of the ma...
متن کاملCommunicating Social Simulation Models to Sceptical Minds
When talking to fellow modellers about the feedback we get on our simulation models the conversation quickly shifts to anecdotes of rejective scepticism. Many of us experience that they get only few remarks, and especially only little helpful constructive feedback on their simulation models. In this forum paper, we give an overview and reflections on the most common criticisms experienced by AB...

متن کاملSingle-case probabilities and the case of Monty Hall: Levy's view
In Baumann (2005) I argued that reflections on a variation of the Monty Hall problem throws a very general sceptical light on the idea of single-case probabilities. Levy (2007) puts forward some interesting objections which I answer here. The notion of probability is so important that we cannot do without it, neither in science nor in everyday life nor in philosophy. At the same time there is m...
